Meet Sam Fein

Sam Fein is running for City Auditor to make Albany’s government more transparent, accountable, and responsive to the people—not the political establishment.

Since 2016, Sam has served as an Albany County Legislator, where he’s fought to expand affordable housing, support small businesses, and bring resources into Albany’s most underserved communities. Sam has always believed that local government should be a force for lifting up communities and creating opportunities—and he’s backed that belief with real results.

His experience spans city, county, and state government. As an Analyst in the City Auditor’s Office, Sam learned firsthand how strong, independent audits can improve city services. In the State Senate, he works as a Policy Director, advancing legislation and developing solutions rooted in data and community needs. He knows how government works—and how to make it work better for everyday people.

Albany is home. Sam’s roots in the city run deep. His great-grandfather grew up on Delaware Avenue, and his family built small businesses in the city’s South End. His grandfather, Rashi Fein, was a national leader in the fight for universal healthcare, inspiring Sam’s lifelong commitment to public service. His grandfather’s call to “mend the crack on the Liberty Bell” to extend America’s promise of liberty and equality to all of its inhabitants continues to guide Sam’s approach to public service, rooted in equity and social justice.

Sam’s hands-on experience is informed by his Capital District higher education. He holds a BA from Union College and an MPA from UAlbany’s Rockefeller College. With both professional and academic experience, he’s ready to lead a City Auditor’s Office that isn’t just a watchdog—but a driver of progress.

As Auditor, Sam will fight for a city government that reflects our values: transparency, accountability, and people-powered solutions. He’ll make sure public dollars are spent wisely and deliver real results, and ensure every Albany resident has a voice in how their city works.
